The story behind the picture: When it snowed in December

Saturday 2nd December 2023.

It started snowing around 10:00am that day and continued throughout the day and evening. Some parts of the South Lakes area were reporting 30-40cm (12-16 inches) of snow by late evening, unprecedented in modern times. There was disruption to power for homes and businesses and Electricity North West said its network had been "severely impacted" by 20 instances of damage caused by the snow. Cumbria Police estimated that about 200 vehicles had become stuck in the South Lakes area, particularly around Kendal, Bowness and Grizedale. A major incident was declared on Saturday evening.

Emergency shelters for anyone stranded were set up at Ambleside Parish Centre.
Coniston Sports and Social Centre and the village hall in Staveley near Kendal.

Electricity North West worked to reconnect more than 7000 customers across the county who had lost electricity due to the power lines being brought down by the weight of snow. Engineers reported difficulties getting to the sites because of congestion on the roads.

Anyone that didn't need to travel could enjoy the snow...
